![]() ![]() Sans sits by, watching everyone around him get slaughtered - even his own dear brother - and yet does next to nothing to stop the human the entire time. The most he does is try to invoke a sense of responsibility in them in the Last Corridor, call them a “dirty brother killer”, and tells them to “go to hell” in his final phone call. Even in these horrific timelines, Sans does not interfere. Though they do not exhaust each region of monsters, the human still wreaks horror and tragedy wherever they step. Consider how, in some very dark Neutral Route gameplays, the human can still enact a genocide and kill basically everyone they come across in the underground. He allows the entire world to pass him by without acting to change it. Sans does not just skimp on work and chores. However, Sans’ apathy cannot be reduced to simple laziness. At one point he even put a flashlight in a lamp stand to avoid changing the light… and kept the flashlight there so long that it, in turn, lost batteries. He even fails to tell Undyne Frisk appears in the underground, and doesn’t try to capture the human, despite that being his job. He shirks on work and passes with minimal performance - just enough to avoid being fired. Sans prefers to hang out at Grillby’s rather than attend to his sentry station. By the end of his time with the human, in fact, Sans is speaking with an internal philosophy that is not nihilistic or apathetic at all! He is speaking with hope and clear affection toward his human friend.Īt first it might seem like simple laziness. Sans regards the human as a friend and becomes inspired by their motivation to change the world. The human is not a simple neutral presence to Sans: in fact, they are a positive inspiration to Sans. While it is true Sans has become apathetic to the world’s events passing around him, he retains in his heart affection for certain people like his brother and the human. I believe Sans legitimately cares about the human. There is a fascinating depth and complexity to Sans’ indifference and how it relates to the individuals around him. I am *so* excited to talk about this! Like you, I love everything about Sans, but his apathy is one of his personality traits that intrigues me and resonates with me the most. Will also be reblogging this to my new Undertale sideblog, lefthanded-sans.
